Paul Simmonds, one of the most high-profile information security professionals in the UK, is to join the giant pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in July.

Simmonds was previously Global Information Security Director for ICI until that company's recent takeover by AkzoNobel. He has also been one of the leading lights in the Jericho Forum, a group of users who have pioneered the notion of 'de-perimeterisation' and the implications that has for information security.

AstraZeneca is a huge organisation with more than 67,000 employees and an annual turnover of around £15 billion. It is active in more than 100 countries, and has major R&D sites in Sweden, the UK and the US.

Simmonds said he will have a direct report to the chief executive of AstaZeneca, something he said was essential for any CISO to be effective. The role is a new one within the company.
