Cyber Security Challenge UK

Cyber Security Challenge UK is a not-for-profit British company that runs IT security-related competitions with the aim of attracting talented people to the IT security industry.

The challenge is open to British citizens resident in the UK as it is focused on addressing a shortage of qualified IT security professionals in the UK. A team consisting of professional bodies, government departments, private industry and public sector organizations manages Cyber Security Challenge UK. The group collaborates with the Cyber Security Challenge US group, but it is managed and operates locally in the UK to reflect UK priorities.

The competitions test a range of skills, including how to spot vulnerabilities, how to defend networks, and how to extract and analyse complex information. Participants who win one of the competitions held throughout the year secure a place in the Cyber Security Challenge UK grand final, or Masterclass, competing with other finalists from across the competitions to win the title of UK Cyber Security Champion. Prizes worth £100,000 provide educational and career development opportunities, such as bursaries, paid internships, private sector training courses and access to professional expertise, knowledge and networking opportunities.

Cyber Security Challenge UK ran its first competition in 2010. Competitions for 2012-13 fall into six categories: secure and control (relating to robotic devices), informed defence, investigate and understand DC3 (the cybercrime unit of the US Department of Defense), risk analysis and policy, ciphers and ‘Can you talk security?’
